My xenon headlight looks like its about to burn out. Do i have to replace the whole part or can i just buy the bulb? Cost?

first of all, if you are still under warranty, simply take it to the dealer. otherwise, read on...

the Xenon headlights consist of 4 components:

1. the Xenon HID bulbs

2. the projector lense/housing

3. the HID ballast

4. the HID ignitor

Any failure of components 1,3, and 4 can result in 'flickering' or failure to ignite the headlights. Any of these components can be replaced individually. One simple thing you can do is to swap the HID/Xenon bulb from one side to the other. If the problem follows the bulb, then you've narrowed the problem down to the bulb. You can also swap each of the above 1, 3, and 4 components from one side to the other to narrow down which component is failing, but that can be a little more involved.

HID/Xenon bulbs usually last a very, very long time. (over 10yrs) if you do need to replace a bulb, look to buy replacements in the aftermarket for D2S HID bulbs that will cost between $40-$70. The BMW dealers typically charge about $150 for the bulb.

Good luck!
