hey guys, i have a 2003 3 series and i wanna know more about sports drive n had few questions....
1) what are the negatives of driving in sports drive(gas, wear, etc..).
2) also say i'm going around 40 and while i'm driving i tap the stick to the left to engage sports drive, is that bad for the car, do i have to be in a complete stop to turn it on?
3) And after i tap it to the left to start Sports drive, taping it up will turn the car into manual(steptronic) right?

BMW has built-in safeguards. It is virtually impossible to harm your system, and the car will shift automatically if you don't.

1) Sports drive causes the gears to change more frequently, and allow the engine to rev harder. This puts a little more stress on many components of the car. It also wasted gas. But as long as you perform regular maintenance on the vehicle, I don't see this as being a problem. If you are trying to make the car last for 300,000 miles with the lowest maintenance costs possible, you'd probably not use sport mode. But in all honesty if that's your attitude, you'd buy a Honda. There is little point in buying a BMW and then not enjoying the sporty way it drives. So I seriously wouldn't worry about it. I certainly wouldn't expect the transmission to suddenly fall apart even if you used sport mode all the time.
