my steering wheel in my 5er (98) is starting to peel now the same thing was happening in my e30 and i dint do anything about it and it got really bad to the point that it went down to the pipe now i wanted to know if theres anytihng i could do to keep this car of doing the same

There're MANY factory BMW steering wheels on Ebay. The ones without airbags are a lot cheaper than those with airbags. It might also be an opportunity for you to switch from leather to wood (or vice-versa) as long as they use the same size/shape airbag unit.

Since you still have your original airbag unit, it wouldn't be too expensive to buy one from Ebay.

I just saw a low cost ''cap'' that goes over your existing wheel - might be an option if you don't want the trouble of changing out the whole wheel.

Is your steering wheel made of high gloss wood or is it a leather covered wheel? It would be very difficult and expensive to repair an OEM steering wheel finish. You can buy low cost steering wheel covers from Pep Boys or auto parts stores. You can also buy high quality aftermarket replacement steering wheels for your BMW from BMP DESIGN, (TX) or BAVARIAN AUTO SPORT (MA). Make sure that your selection is made to fit the e39 FIVE Series.
