BMW E24 6 Series question?

I recently bought an '88 635 CSi, and would like to grab some M6 parts to improve performance. For example, replacing the SOHC with DOHC, installing an M6 throttle body assembly (individual throttle bodies per cylinder), etc. I know a lot of E30 guys like to grab M3 parts for their 318's and 325's, is this still feasible for the E24 6 series?

My thought is that it is not very feasible upgrade, and I do not believe I have seen anybody do it.. The SOHC and DOHC are different engines by a lot of internal pieces, including the engine management unit, exhaust, and lots of little things, as well as the M6 pieces tend to be significantly higher and grabbing them is not an easy or inexpensive proposition. If your pockets are deep, nothing is impossible, but you would really be better buying an M6 and getting all the parts and packaging as I would bet it is easier and cheaper in the longer run. The M6 was about a $57K car in 1989 and the 635csi was $47k, so they are relative bargains and still popular with enthusiasts, and they keep their values pretty well.

If you can not find a M6 as your add on indicates, use the 635csi as the learning tool as you gain experience in doing maintenance and fixing the common issues within the series. You really do not want to have more money in a 635 than an M6. Also, consider looking beyond Hawaii for prospects if you have been finding the market too limiting. Happens all the time, you just need to look beyond your existing box!! Good luck! The M6 is a classic and timeless design.

BMW 2002 325xi cold feet in back?

Hi, I have a 2002 325xi and some of my passengers are complaining about their feet being cold in the back. I have adjusted all of the heating areas (focusing on feet), but it doesn't seem to help.

I believe that some of the vents pointed to the back feet maybe jammed. Does anyone know where the back feet vents are located?

There are vents under seats in my 2004 330xi. Try feeling under the backside of the front seats when you put the heat only on the floor and with the fan on high.

Which reminds me that I shouldn't store stuff under the seats.

I installed a new bath last year, picked it up from a DIY supermarket with my 928 - fitted easily in the rear hatch. try to do that with the BMW.
The Porsche 928 S4 is faster. 0-60mph(0-100kph) in 5.9 seconds and 147mph top speed.

The BMW 635 goes to 60mph in around 7 seconds and has a top speed of 130mph. The Porsche is also better handling and more balanced and lighter and more aerodynamic than the BMW.

Unless you have an check engine light, changing the O2 sensors will be a waste of time. The engine may have a deeper internal problem with compression considering the mileage on it. Your dumping in more fuel to get the same power as it did when it was new. To me, I'd consider a bigger issue. Compression.

Try the water temp sensor.

It senses if your engine warmed up. While the computer thinks the engine is cold, it will run then engine RICH (poor fuel economy). I answer lots of questions here, and lately more and more people are reporting poor economy (and the weather is turning cold). Hmmmmm....

The thing about water temp sensor is that a failed sensor often does NOT turn on the check engine light. The only nice thing about failed check engine light is that it is fairly easy and cheap to replacel

BMWs are like any other cars. You get out of them what you put into them. If you take care of them, they will last over a million miles. However, when you do have problems, they are expensive, especially if you go to a dealership. I had a 30 dollar hose replaced that cost almost 150 because the labor cost was 99/hr.

Bimmers are just plain fun to drive .....its a driving experience one would NEVER forget in his or her lifetime but it does come with a little more to maintain. I have a VW and just love driving it but BMW provide an even better experiance as my friend can attest. If you worry about repair cost....go with Japanese.
Lots of front end work control arms bushings and I cant keep tires on it I'm glad I bought some cheap steel rimes that can run cheap tires instead of $235 a tire.
Is it an E30? If so, you're mainly looking at suspension bushes, dodgy motronic ECU boards, and rust in the sills and floor. Nothing unfixable. Also, make sure your cylinder head bolts are the later torx-head type, not the original hex-head design - they break. Replace them with the new versions.
I own a BMW 7-series and I just have the random troulbe. Just recently it's been stalling out at stop signs. It cost me about fifty bucks to get it fixed. Besides that, no troulbe at all. I don't know a lot about 3-series, but I know a lot of people w/ BMWs and I think they're pretty durable cars.

Here're some pros and cons for your decision making:

- Installation nightmare

With many aftermarket GPS units with advanced features coming down in price, I believe the sensible way is to buy an aftermarket unit.

But for me, the way you INSTALL the aftermarket unit makes all the difference. I don't like wires running all over the car, and I certainly don't like something stuck on my windshield all the time.

So I run a hidden power cable to a KUDA mount (see url) and have my GPS mounted using some Scotch (EZpass type) fasterners.

I use the phone base rather than the one that blocks the air conditioning vents. It looks less intrusive and less clutter.

How much time is elapsed between engine start ups? How far are you driving in the average trip? Are you driving mostly at night with all lights, heater, CD player, etc all playing at once? Try turning off all accessories except for the lights which you will need for nighttime driving. If your battery holds up well enough to start your car every other day with no accessories running, then try eliminating one accessory at a time by turning it on for a couple of days to see which accessory is causing the battery drain. Some of the newer cars have many accessories that cannot readily be switched off. Like for example: a heated windshield, or a heater fan, or some night light somewhere. Look all around your car; something will not be working or not working correctly. If no load problems are found, you can go to an auto electric shop and have your new battery LOAD TESTED. It could have an internal short circuit causing a serious current drain and eventually a no start situation. A defective new battery should have a 100 % warranty for at least 12 months. I once had a trunk light that never shut off, and it would drain the battery in a couple of days if the car was not being driven regularly.

The E430 has the V8 so obviously its better, if it was a BMW540i it would be a different story. They are both great cars though.
depends on the price and features. If you are looking for performance, bmw would be better. If you are looking for luxury, Mercedes would be better.

But if you are looking for a blend of luxury and performance, than Mercedes is still better.

BMW is a great car with good gas mileage, Benz has more power, depends on what more important to you. Personally I would go with the 530i, has a good amount of power and still won't be at the pumps as much as the Benz. Also reliability wise, the 530i should come out on top.

BMW Brakes?

My brakes need replacing and I'm going to do them myself. However, all my other cars have always been american and I've always used after market ceramics or semi metallic brakes. The auto parts store only seems to carry semi metallic brakes for this car ($50) and the dealer sells them for $140. I called Midas out of curiosity and they told me that after market brakes don't work correctly and will make a lot of noise. Is this true? Cuz, it doesn't make much sense to me...semi metallic brakes are semi metallic brakes. Also, I want to put ceramic ones in there. Is there a problem if I do so?

i wouldn't see a problem with them, just research it on bimmerforums.com .. aftermarket will work.
Just get some decent ceramics and have the rotors resurfaced when you replace the pads, you should be fine.

BMW O2 sensors went out?

Well I ran over a long piece of wood in the middle of the street the other day. Nothing really happened.. except the track on my CD skipped for about 10 seconds. The next morning, the ''check engine'' light comes on so I ask a friend and he says its probably the O2 sensors that went out. What does this mean and do I need to fix or replace the sensors? The check engine light went out a few hours after they came on, so does that mean there is nothing wrong anymore?

No, the ''check engine'' light can mean one of several hundred different fault codes, not all are related to O2 sensors. The only way to find out for sure is to have the fault code read with an OBD-II scanner or BMW fault code scanner. Even if the ''check engine'' light went away, the fault code is still stored and can be retrieved by said scanner.

However, considering that you said it was a long piece of wood, i doubt that any of that wood hit the O2 sensors or related wire harness. So, my best guess is that it has nothing to do with the O2 sensors.

On the other hand, you mention that your CD skipped and took a while to come back. This to me indicates that it was a pretty good jolt. What I think is more likely, is that possibly the ground cable or power cable to the battery came slighty loose during this jolt. When that happens, your ignition system isn't able to get the power it needs to operate properly. You then get misfires in the cylinders. If there are enough misfires detected, the ''check engine'' light will illuminate. It is possible that since then, the battery terminal cables have ''fallen back in place'' so the misfires are gone and after a few hours of normal driving, the check engine light went out.

firstly 330d does not have spark plugs as its a diesel. The diesel injection systems can play up on them as they are completly electronically controlled.

The immobiliser can disrupt the system, and cause it to not start. Check the glow pugs have power going to them and also that the glow plugs themselves are actually glowing.

If they are, check that they is actually fuel in the fuel filter and that it is getting to the injectors. no other reasons why a diesel should not start

If you have folding rear seats lift the rear of the seat base and a red tab should pop up on the backrest next to head restraint. If it does not try fiddling with the release lever (looks a bit like a spoon and is next to the wheel arch). If you do not have folding seats then there should be a small ski hatch behind the center arm rest as said above.

Some BMW modules do allow access to the trunk from the backseats, including 525 modules. To access the trunk from the back seats, there will be a lever or a notch behind the headrest of each seat. But some modules require a key to unlock this hatch. Good luck.

Dealer told me this past weekend that you absolutely cannot put chains on the 18 or 19'' sport wheels that the BMWX3 Sports Pkg comes with. Any truth to this? We want this to be our SUV for our Snowboarding trips, etc. Does getting the sports pkg make it more of a sports car rather than a functional SUV? :(

The dealer is correct. However, it's not so much the sport wheels as it is the tires that comes with BMW sport packages. They are usually summer-only tires, and the vehicle would not even move in snow with those. So do not get the sport package. Also keep in mind that that X3 is not exactly BMW's best vehicle. For the same money or less you would be better off with an Acura RDX or MDX. Both handle better, ride better, have more room (MDX), nicer interior, and will be great in snow. That's my two cents. Test drove the RDX; X3 is superior to RDX in driving dynamics and overall performance. MDX is really more of a competitor to the X5. Also the X3 Interior is improved in 2007. You can get the 18'' wheels without the sport package with all-weather tires on X3 as a low cost option. Report It

Guys %26 gals, thanks for your input, an update on my progress. Might stay with OEM engine, my engine does not leak coolant or oil. May be the electric fan relay or fan motor is out. Don't know which yet. The vibration from under caridge/driveline, think it's center bearing, I'm replacing it, first. For front-end, I'm looking at replacing lower control -arm bushings, tie-rods ends, %26 may be struts. The problem is encountering pot holes %26 having no control afterwards. Put on new wires, car runs better, RPM dropped some. Must look at senors or get an OHM meter to help check.

Well, you'll have to pull the entire drive shaft out to do the carrier bearing anyway. So I'd have to say replace Transmission shaft seal, and U-joints too.

Don't waste your time with the Diff. seal. The yoke nut is a bitc%.

As far as ballancing the drive line?? Unless you see some indication of damage, or it seems to be missing a ballancing weight (welded on) don't bother with ballancing it.

Check the end play of the input shaft bearing to the differencial. (up and down)

While you're there, you may want to replace the tranny mount, and check the cross member for secureness.

There're 2 types of aftermarket filters. A drop-in type which uses your factory airbox, and a cold-air-intake type; which replaces your factory airbox and ductwork.

The only advantage of adding an after market drop in filter is that you won't need to keep buying new filters.

Adding a Cold Air Intake will give you a few extra HP at the very top end... but it depends how much time you spend driving at the very top end, and whether you feel the few HP is worth that money. On regular driving, it's no use, and it also creates more noise.

For BMWs, there isn't much gain due the fact that the engine runs pretty hot. If you want any kind of performance gain, you would need to create a heat shield around the air filter. Even after that, you would be lucky to gain few HP.

Refering to Audi RS4 and BMW M3.

The Audi car is set up with very stiff suspension and is great for hugging tight bends and cornering fast!

The M3 is not soft by any means and much better to get the back end hanging out!

Both cars are really very good...

The RS4 will get you where you want to go slightly quicker, whereas you will have more fun in the M3.

Personally, I would go with the Audi!

You can use an aftermarket CD head unit with the built in amp with no issues. You will need an adapter for the antenna as the BMW uses a smaller jack.

I installed an Alpine CD in my 525iT (identical wiring and cassette head unit to your E36) with no issues then went back to a factory BMW CD43 from a Z3 to keep the stock look.

Plug n' play.

The BMW amplifiers use only the + side of the speaker output. This means you would have to find an amplifier that can use a chassis ground signal. When hooking up a typical aftermarket amp you need to use 2 more wires to complete the -/+ feed from the decks normal speaker output and break it down with resisters to make it a regular signal for the new amps input (rca). Since most amps have 3 or more sets of RCA inputs you will only have one feed from the deck. Then you do this you end up two wires short. This can be cured by adding two speaker wires to the front dash and attaching them to one of the two front speaker sets (not the tweeter). Once you have signal to the amp and have all the wires you need to not have to install new wires to the trunk. However a 200watt amp should be powered my a much larger wire than the stock BMW amp uses. Now once you have all that set up you have to cap the amps output wires to send the right frequency to the right speakers.

If your not into all that just open the dash up and pull the body's door trim up and add some RCA's to and a big fat + and - power wires and a then capp the wires..

You need to be more specific. There are 100 different answers for radio wiring. If it is the head unit you want, go to a best buy or circuit city and ask for a wiring harness for the head unit. They will give you a model specific plug that will then have wires that are color corresponding to the ones going from the head unit.

The 320d is famous for ingesting 'swirl flaps,' Inducing catastrophic engine failures. Do a google search on the phrase. You'll also find that many of them suffer turbo failures, but the swirl flap is the deal breaker, as the engine is destroyed.

Rather than buying BMW for its brand name and high safety car you can go for Mercedez Benz petrol operated which is a good car for its performance with 2003-05 model will be advisable

Diesel every time. Test drive both if you can. I would be very surprised if you didn't find the diesel a better drive (unless to are a confirmed petrol head of course).

Tricky huh? Actually in an effort to perfectly balance their automobiles BMW placed the battery in the trunk. Open your trunk and remove the panel on the passenger side. Then the battery can be removed by just unscrewing a couple of bolts. You should even have all the tools you need right in the trunk in the tool compartment. Good luck. I think it's under the rear seat on the passenger side. Some Buicks have the same location. The seat should have a little strap you pull on near the back cushion pulling the back of the seat up and forward toward the front of the car.

If it's like most ABS vehicles, it shouldn't have anything to do with starting. Usually the ABS lights up during startup when it's doing it's self diagnosis. Afterwards, the light tells you the ABS is not working and your brakes will operate just like non-ABS brakes.

You might try removing the battery cable momentarily to see if that resets things. If you had to open up any of the brake lines, you could have air in them which could also show up as a fault.

BMWs follow a certain nomenclature in the naming of many of their vehicles; a 3 digit number is followed by 1 or 2 letters. The first number is the series number. The next two numbers traditionally represent the engine displacement in cubic centimeters divided by 100.

It's just what it says it is. BMW sells a separate washerfluid for these systems. As if the original factory washer fluid is not enough! I have found anything as strong since what originaly came in my car from the factory.

Anyway, the intensive fluid is a highly concentrated cleaning formula and is used for the dried bugs, grime and tar that can accumulate on the windshield and headlamps if you have the headlamp washing system as well..

I don't beleive it's offered on US spec cars any longer.

I LOVE Volvo! I feel incredibly safe in this car and I think they're a great value. My next car will also be a Volvo.

My husband drives a BMW 325i and he LOVES it. I don't think the BMW is overpriced. We love driving his car and he gets good gas mileage. His next car will also be a BMW.

I'm not a big fan of Saab, however, my husband's last car was a Saab - an older one.

I would go with Volvo or BMW, but only in a sedan. I think the BMW SUVs are way overpriced. You can't go wrong with these two cars.

You are having a transmission failure. A common defect in BMW in your model year. I had it on mine too. Changing of transmission fluid/filter or anything else short of the whole transmission WILL NOT help you at this point.

Without writing in, the dealer would be happy to charge you $6,000 for a remanufactured transmission. You will however still need to go to the dealer to let them see and have it in their record that they've seen it. Then you can proceed...

What you do next will decide if you will end up paying the full $6,000, $3,000 or if you're lucky, $0.

nitrous is NOT the way to go...stock motors have a tough time with it, and a BMW motor is VERY expensive to replace. either blower will cost more to begin with, but with a thicker head gasket to lower compression, they will give LOTS of power and loads of FUN!

Try driving both, and I'm pretty sure you'll end up with the Z4.

You can now rent the Crossfire from Hertz (if they still have them).

Try it, then go to a BMW dealer to test drive the Z4. They are 2 completely different cars.

The Crossfire is so much a ''wannabe''... the interior, dials all look so cheap compared to the Z4 (because it IS cheap)...

While many say the Crossfire is really a SLK, it isn't!

Many of the SLK's more expensive components and electronics were swapped out with cheaper Chrysler ones, and many aluminum parts were swapped out with cheaper iron/steel parts that makes the Crossfire just... a Crossfire.

In the end of the day, there really isn't any comparison with the BMW Z4. Not even close. Drive it, and you'll notice it right away.
A better comparison would be the Z4 and the second generation SLK. The Crossfires were based on the first generation SLK. Someone, the Crossfire as being less safe than the Z4, this is simply not the case. Keep in mind, it depends on the Crossfire, because the SRT-6 was only in convertible form, but it was based on the SLK32 AMG.

Have you sold cars before? If you haven't, I wouldn't recommend going straight into internet sales. It's a whole different ballgame. Internet customers are much pickier and all they are doing is price shopping. You may sell cars, but your commissions will be drastically reduced. Get a build sheet. I am not sure about beamers, but you might find it under the back seat. The build sheet is what goes down the assembly line so that the proper items are installed, including the paint. Good luck. The VIN will show lots of info, but not the paint code. However once again not too sure about the beamers.
Call a dealership, they'll be able to help you.
Rich777 is right. The original paint code can be determined thru the VIN if you know how.
Any half decent paint supplier will match it without the code and even tell you the code if you say pretty please.

And if you got into an accident and your headlight were an issue of the accident they could be liable. Basically they don;t want to take the chance. Just go to a regular shop, they will do it. And they will do it better for less cost.

Having read that air bags are not MOT items is it unreasonable for an insurer not to replace the passenger a/b in order to come within the repair costs? They also refuse to accept the difference in their estimate to car value and want to scrap the car. Being it's a difficult model to find I would like it repaired.

They will put the car back to its original state if it is economically feasible, if not they are entitled to ''write it off''

Tell them to come up with a mutually favourable value and tell them you want to keep the car as well.

Then get it repaired with the insurance money and have some cash left over.

I can say that when you drive these, they feel great and are second to none!!

My first M was a really old M6, it was great and I found it fun to drive!

However, something a real driver will not tell you about these cars(all m series)

when you drive these, sometimes the steering wheel snaps back at you and you have to have complete control and muscle otherwise you can sprain your wrist and lose the car!!

The engines used for both 1998 E36 and E46 316 are M43 and M43TU. The specs are the same for head bolts...

BMW 335 and the 328.... how can you tell the difference when driving?

The 335i will rocket from 0-60 in a blithering 4.8 seconds. The reason for this is because it contains a twin-turbo engine, and it greatly emulates and almost surpasses the previous generation ///M3 in performance.

The ride is very smooth. When driving over a gravel road, there is very little difference from the feel of an asphalt road.

The throttle response is great. You tap the gas and it lurches out like no other car. The luxury in this car is exhilarating. In simple terms, you feel like you're in a Mercedes and a BMW the whole ride.

In general, the Mercedes part of the 335i is that it is simply a better well-rounded car than the 328i, which has poor feel and fair performance. This means that the 335i is much more luxurious while on the other hand, sitting in the 328i makes you feel like a kidnapped woman sitting in the backseat in a tractor. The BMW part of the 335i is that the throttle response is great, and you get that feeling of fast the 328i can't conjure.

Yeah I would say they are pretty good. I would say it is the best 4x4. In icy conditions though they aren't the best car to have. If you hit black ice on the motorway and lose control the car will roll and it will be quite hard to keep under control due to the high center of gravity. But if you are somewhere where it doesn't get cold very often then if it is a 4x4 that you want then it is the choice of many people.

If you want one then get one of the newer models as older ones sometimes had a few problems. The front and rear have also been redesigned.

For smaller, sportier cars, BMW: the M3, 135i, 335i. The older M5 was awesome but I'm not so keen on the current one. The current 5 series looks like hell and I've never been a fan of the 7 series. BMW makes some good-looking sports coupes (the M Coupe is AWESOME!) with power and handling to back them up, but I've never been set ablaze by their luxury sedans.

For larger luxury cars, I prefer Mercedes. The CLS, S class, SL, SLK... all those awesome AMG sedans with 6.3 liters... hell yeah! Although I would break and say the CLK63 is an awesome sports coupe, barring that, I'd take Mercedes' luxury sedans.

I'm sure the resale value will be very good just like on the 3 series. Larger luxury cars tend to depreciate much faster then small entry level luxury cars. Also, sedans depreciate faster then coupes typically. The 5 and esspecially 7 series lose tremendous amounts of value as a % and $ amount.

Well, marketing is marketing, so take it as such. The BMW 1 is a reissue of a classic 70's version. Reports in say it's a set of smokin hot wheels. The platform is smaller and is designed to compete with Japanese and US cars of the same size, horsepower and configuration. Buying a car the first year of production can be risky as not all ''bugs and kinks'' haven't been worked out.

To be sure you want to shell out more than 30K for this BMW, test drive it, and talk to others who have it already.
I'm going to get one, it is at a good price and has amazing performance and its a brand name car. So its not just good its the BEST.

Honestly, it's too soon to say just how good the new M3 will be. I have a friend who drives a 07 M5, however, and he is less than impressed with it. I think the 5 series is more in the luxury segment (I had a 545i but sold it because I couldn't stand the iDrive.... it will definitely be my last BMW purchase until they fix that stupid system.) I would wait, then, and look at the 09M3. If you want need the room of a 5 series, I would not spend the $ on the M.

take the battery terminals off clean the terminals and posts .. check the fluid leven in the battery.. change the air cleaner filter and check the fuel filter.. the hand brake light.. make shure the brake is releasing.. the cable could have gotten some foreign matter in it under the car.. that could cost a fortune and ruin a tire jack the car up put the hand brake on and let it up then make shure the tire spins with the brake pedal up .. if it dosent you need to check out what is binding the cable ok.

Your owner's manual may tell you how often to change the fuel filter and purge the water from it. Fill the new filter up with fresh diesel fuel before replacing it to minimize the bleeding necessary. Never let the fuel tank go below 1/4 full and you won't risk pumping the water off the bottom of the tank into the fuel filter and injection pump. It's a countdown. It's not one for one though. High revs and cold engine driving count as additional miles on the counter so that you end up changing it sooner, just as you would if you didn't have a counter and drove a lot of stop and go or short distances.

I just went through this too. I found mine in the paperwork, it comes on pocket cards, but they get lost. hopefully the owner wrote it down somewhere. you can take your registration to a dealer and he can get it for a fee.

once you get it, it may not work because you have been pushing buttons, so the only way to clear them and start over is to turn on the ignition and radio for one hour, then it will clear previous attempts and you can try again. mine was 11515, you can try that..good luck

When I try to unlock my car via the remote control key the alarm goes off and the only way to turn it off is to open the hood and insert the alarm key. This has happened randomly throughout the past couple of years.

The M has 333 hp, so it is just a little more, but the suspension, and handling make up for it. Plus the M isn't a turbo, so the power is constant, where as with the 335 the turbo has to build up before the power kick in. The M is also a more dependable engine, and can be built up to 500 hp like nothing. In case you can't tell, i drive a M3, pushing roughly 425hp, 430 Lbs torque, and can out handle anyone on the road.

Personally, I'd search for a BMW enthusiasts/tuner site %26 read-up on what folks who have your car can %26 have done with it. After all, you've got a very specialized machine on your hands...best to interact with M3 owners.

Your challenge is that you have a factory motor that's already peaked %26 tweaked to the moon. Adding mods w/o understanding the dynamics of your motor's design could bring problems fast...detonation, for example.

The simplest mods that would bring the least risk would be CAI, exhaust, headers... Typically sport sedans see around 10+% gains from these.

There're MANY factory BMW steering wheels on Ebay. The ones without airbags are a lot cheaper than those with airbags. It might also be an opportunity for you to switch from leather to wood (or vice-versa) as long as they use the same size/shape airbag unit.

Since you still have your original airbag unit, it wouldn't be too expensive to buy one from Ebay.

I just saw a low cost ''cap'' that goes over your existing wheel - might be an option if you don't want the trouble of changing out the whole wheel.

Depends, for the new V8 M3 you're gonne need the thick end of 40k. For an R34 your's gonna need about 20k. A fairer comparison would be the E46 M3, both cars can be had for 20k in good condition.

Depends how good a driver you are. Performance wise, there's very little between the two as standard. A Skyline is easier to tune if thats your thing but personally the 276bhp they quote is a fallacy. The original R32 was quoted as 276bhp, and since then, they've made the R34 quicker in everyway, all with the same 276bhp engine, doesn't take a genius to figure out that you can only do so much by lightening a car.

Personally I'd go for the M3, it's classier, and inside it feels more special in a quality kind of way. The Skyline's built well but it's a bit plasticky. The M3 is also, for me, the drivers car of the two. A chimp can make a skyline go quick, it takes considerably more conviction and skill to hustle an M3 through the bends at ten tenths. Besides, the shriek from the VANOS engine at full chat is something else, it's common knowledge that the M-power straight six is one of the best engines in the world. If you can find one, the sequential box is one of a kind and gives it a race car feel, as you punch the gear stick forward to shift up, and back for down.

I didn't believe them, but wanted to check with other owners first. Why could I not get the oil changed at a quick lube? Why could I not buy regular tires of the same size from a tire store? I'm on my 2nd BMW. A full set of R-compound (Racing) tires ran me about $1000, but that's for the M5 which has the widest tires of any of the sedans. Tire cost is more relative to tire size than anything else.

Wheels are another matter. If you're looking to replace the wheels, they get pricey. That's true of any make.

Full service is NOT included with any BMW after 2000. I have an '02, and it's not included. I've heard ads recently, but it's a more recent thing.

Oil changes: BMW's take 100% synthetic oil ONLY. If you go to Jiffy Lube they won't have it. You'd need to bring your own from Pep Boys or something.

Independent BMW certified mechanics can be much better than dealerships since they won't have the high labor cost and they can do almost everything the dealership can, and they'll honor your warranty.

Yes, you'll need to redo the engine mounts.

You'll also need to install a new wiring loom.

You may need to change the front suspension as the new 6-pot will be heavier than the 4-pot.

You'd need to check as to whether the gearbox is suitable. They don't always match up, so you may need a new box as well. If you do then you may also need a new drive shaft to the rear diff.

What about the radiator? It may need to be moved, or replaced with one from a 6-pot car.

Overall its a pretty big job, but not impossible. Many have done it and succeeded.

BUT - Why replace a 1.8 with a 2 litre? The gains will be marginal for the amount of work required. If you're going to swap out the engine, then at least put in something worth while, like a 2.8, or 3 litre 6-pot. Even go for a 4.4 V8 if you can find one.

Now that WOULD be worth it!

Don't bother unless your going to go the whole way and fit 2.5 or a midfield 2.7 engine, the cars are cheap, and it's easier just to buy a 320i if you want a 2.0 litre, remember as well as the engine you have to think about uprating gearbox, diff , suspension and brakes. oh and don't forget about about telling your insurance company.
If you're an engineer this is a worthy challenge. I've seen a VR6 Golf engine mated to a Lupo...yes that tiny thing. Best check Performance BMW magazine where you'll find clubs %26 specialists that do this for a living. If thats what you wants thats what you'll get...at a price!

Ive seen 6 cylinders swapped into the 318i four cylinder cars. It works really well because of the light weight of the 318i. It is alot of work however. You will have to fabricate engine mounts, mate up a transmission that fits, and find a wiring harness that is close. It is easier on older cars because of the OBD 1. What year is the car? What year is the engine?

well, since u didnt even put what type of mercedes, its hard to answer this question. i think bmw and mercedes in general go hand and hand. they both have their pro's and con's. from personal experience, at speeds of over 110 mph, mercedes handles A LOT better. It sticks to the ground better and has a lot more control. But i doubt you'll be going over triple digit speeds. BMW seems better for driving around town. It seems to have smoother handling and nice breaks.

Hi, disconnect the battery earth lead(the black one).

Then put the black lead of a multimeter on the battery and the red on the lead you have disconnected. make sure the ignition is `off.

Set the meter to amps and read the screen - it will say how much drain is being pulled by the faulty source.

The reading should be less than 0.5 of an Amp preferbly.

If it is not less than that proceed to remove fuses one at a time until the drain drops below 0.5 Amps.

When it drops you will then know what circuit is causing the drain by what number fuse you have removed - check the manuel for fuse listing.

When you know what circuit the problem is down to you can then check that circuit individually.

The usual fault is an interior lamp left on in the boot or a dodgy alarm system in either case it is easier to leave the fuse out as long as it does not supply anything else...or you could of cause rectify the fault.

there is no separate fuse for that guage.

either the sensor is bad. or vacuum problem. or guage is bad.

Check the fuse, location is in the owners manual. Also check for loose connections. Sensor may need to be checked also.

I think the X5 is one of the best SUV built ever, so if you own one or are planning to buy one, I think it is a good investment, but as I said before, just like in any other object, it depends on the way it has been treated. There can be a car with less than 30000 miles ready for the garbage and a car with more than 100000 in perfect shape.

I would expect a BMW to last a while. However, all vehicles lose considerable value the moment they drive out of the showroom. The more mileage on it, the less it is worth. Same when it starts degrading. Rust will be the long-term problem.

My X5 has 90k+ miles on it and is still going strong. As long as you wash it regularly, don't abuse the interior and drive it off road it will last as long as you'd like it to. There are plenty of 20+ year old BMW's on the road. They eventually get discarded due to wear and tear but they are solid cars.

Over expensive for what amounts to some very basic engineering compared to cars in a similar price range. Also over heavy and not nearly as drivable as similar models.

People that buy them buy them for out dated reasons. Like vintage wine - one or two years are good and then you get some bad years but people who do not know better go on buying!

If you are buying or leasing a new BMW, then you will not have to worry about maintenance because BMW pays for nearly everything. I know that windshield wiper blades and oil changes are included, but I doubt tires or brakes are. If you look on www.bmwusa.com at the lease offers, there are lots of great deals. I have compared a lot of cars in this range lately and I can say that overall, BMW leases are the best deal for the price. Certified used BMW's also have extended warranties and maintenance schedules, so they are an even better bargain. Do your research before you buy one and you will be fine. Read the car magazines, go to car websites and test drive one. And no, I do not work for BMW.
