The Obvious first thing to check are the Plugs -- but I have had a very similar experience with my B M W = After checking and re-checking It turned out to be an Item called a ''Fuel Regulator'' which does exactly that -- regulates the flow of fuel -- if it is mal-functioning - the car will ''Cut Out'' , Mine would ''Re - Start'' after about five minutes -- but gradually got worse - fortunately I found someone who recognised the fault and replaced the Fuel Regulator - everything =O K --- Hope this Helps you -- Good Luck

Try the crank sensor. Not a p*ss take, there really is a crank sensor.
Probably something to do with the owners ego.
318's are bad cars you need to invest in a m3 e36
i used to have this with my little car. it was because the fuel filter was screwed. it would not let enough fuel through to start sometimes and then others it would take in to much and backfire (fuel ignighted by hot exhaust metal or gases). just got it serviced and problem stopped. There can however be many other causes but this is my only idea.
Something along the line of timing problems, so test the ignition system first. Next in line is mechanical, could be timing chain. Last thing to check is for burnt valves and or rings. If last item best to replace the motor.
