The 320d is famous for ingesting 'swirl flaps,' Inducing catastrophic engine failures. Do a google search on the phrase. You'll also find that many of them suffer turbo failures, but the swirl flap is the deal breaker, as the engine is destroyed.

Rather than buying BMW for its brand name and high safety car you can go for Mercedez Benz petrol operated which is a good car for its performance with 2003-05 model will be advisable
both engines are good when running correctly but both engines have there problems.diesel is harder and moe expensive to get new or used partsa.
Diesel every time. Test drive both if you can. I would be very surprised if you didn't find the diesel a better drive (unless to are a confirmed petrol head of course).

Diesel version is cheaper to fuel as well!
