BMW 328i increasing rpm while in park?

I just recently bought a 97 model 328i from an auto auction. The car is in great shape except for while im in ''park'' the engine will increase in rpm and go back down in around 1 second intervals. Should i be worried about this problem or is there any way to fix this.

-thank you

I suggest taking your car to a bmw shop and not wasting money on guess work. A bmw tech will be able to pin point the problem quickly. Could just be an idle valve. But I would be guessing without looking at it.

Take it to a machanic and have them check the mass airflow sensor
i own a repair shop and usually this is caused by a bad 0-2 sensor or a throttle position sensor ,right now its not too much of a concern though, but it will eventually need to be replaced though, but that's not bad ,most cars that come from auctions or sales need a lot more than this ,so if that's all it needs your lucky ,later on you might want to have it checked to see if it needs a good tune up ,that couldn't hurt it none at all,and in most cases you,ll find they do need tuned a little, good luck with it hope this helps.
sounds like a idleling sensor usally located on the firewall or throttle body
Like everyone already said it's probably a sensor (oxygen or idle). If you trust your mechancial aptitude, then before you throw away your money at an auto shop, adjust the fuel to air intake ratio, sounds like too much fuel not enough air.
If you have your a/c on or the car's heater in defrost mode this is normal. The a/c system is on to freeze moisture from the air as it circulates inside the car to de fog the windows. Since the a/c compressor robs horsepower from the engine, the computer is programed to raise the idle if the engine is below a predetermined rpm. If the heater/ ac is not on you may have a problem with the idle control motor or a small vaccuume leak somewhere. The IAC motor allows extra air to bypass the throttle body valve and thus raises the idle to the desired rate (this is why it is important to regularly clean the throttle body) a small vaccuume leak will generaly cause the rpm to go up %26 stay there.
