BMW OBD II P1477 code?

Hello,

I have 1999, 328I. Engine light lit and my mechanic diagnosed P1477. He does not know about it. He put in fuel cleaner and deleted the light, but it popped up again after 3-4 days. He checked with a bigger machine, and it was unable to diagnose it. Smaller machine still pointed out P1477. I can find it online that it means ''Leakage Diagnostic Pump Reed Switch Did Not Open'' but to me it is just Jubrish. I will appreciate if anyone can guide me and tell me that what can be the reason for that, what should I do, what will happen if I keep using the car without taking care of it, and how much it can cost me? I checked forums, but they were not helpful. A person changed a bunch of parts advised by his mechanic, but did not get rid of the problem. I am a student, and will appreciate a reasonable, cheaper solution.

Thank you.

There is a fault with you're fuel leak diagnostic pump. There is either a leak in your fuel lines or the pump itself is bad, or even your gas cap isn't making a proper seal. Running the car without solving this problem will have no affect on the car, however, if there is a fuel leak you might notice a loss in fuel economy. The pump itself should be located next to the carbon cannister. This pump pressurizes the fuel system to check for leaks. If the reed switch did not open, it would mean that the pump is still trying to pressurize the fuel. Have all your fuel lines checked out, along with your injectors. Also, you might want to change your fuel filter and check to see if your fuel pump is producing adequate pressure. If all else fails, replace the leakage diagnostic pump.

that is a code for the ldp pump. it checks the fuel tank and filler hoses for leaks. possible bad leak diagnosis pump. possible bad gas cap. possible loose gas cap.

make sure your gas cap has the o-ring to seal properly.

tighten gas cap and drive 2 drive cycles. if light goes out, it was a loose gas cap. if not, probable a bad leak diag pump.
